To be honest it could have been turned into something more in Star Trek cycle to go down that road. They could have taken the same route as.. (I will say it) Stargate SG1 In where The federation with all its Future Fancy Technology finds even more Advance technology from the Lost Iconian Empire.
I am a Trek and Stargate Nerd to the core I just now began to see how that Episode in DS9 was paying Homage towards Stargate SG1 and the Stargate universe like it was saying okay you are now officially the Top Scifi show
